EnBy by Mark Baigent

EnBy was created from the idea that identity, much like scent, does not exist within fixed categories. Mark Baigent created the world's first non-binary perfume challenges binary thinking by bringing together notes associated with comfort, nostalgia, attraction, and even aversion. Just as people cannot be reduced to simple labels, neither can fragrance be reduced to simple labels. EnBy is not a unisex perfume. While the term unisex functions as an adjective describing the assertion of sex, EnBy challenges the assumption that fragrance must be defined in relation to binary gendered categories at all. It was created to reject gendered expectations rather than attempting to reconcile them.
My interest in creating a perfume came from a desire to make something deeply personal: a scent built from memories. Under the guidance of perfumer Nora Gasparini, founder of L'Atelier Parfums et Créations.
"Nora taught me so much about how creating a perfume is not about smelling but about recreating memories. So the goal was to capture the memories of the last thirty years of my life with scents where each decade should be represented by three ingredients".
The first chapter draws from childhood. Coffee recalls my family home, a scent I once disliked but that remains inseparable from those memories. Alongside coffee are herbs and spices such as rosemary and Javanese pepper, aromas that would later reappear throughout my life. The second chapter reflects my teenage years and a period of self-discovery. During this time, I became fascinated by the countercultures of the 1960s, as represented by patchouli and oud, ingredients with rich cultural histories across the Middle East and South Asia. The final chapter centres on Indonesia, which has profoundly shaped my early adult life. Tobacco and pepper evoke the experiences I had in Central Java and Yogyakarta, while frangipani is the scent that represents Bali for me. A place that has become the central hub of my artistic practice.
EnBy brings these three decades and their memories together into a single composition. Rather than creating a fragrance for a specific gender, the aim was to create a fragrance that reflects the complexity of lived experience. The name itself references non-binary identity and the importance of visibility, while the scent invites the wearer to form their own personal connections and interpretations. EnBy is a perfume about memory, transformation, and the understanding that identity is never fixed.
